The Twilight Zone of Propagation
Ham operators can control many aspects of their station equipment and operating style to maximize their success with DX chasing, contesting, or other involvement with varied emergency communication experiences. There is one magical factor, the Twilight Zone of Propagation, also known as “A Tale of Two Ionospheres.”
Advancements in scientific tools over the last 50 years have given a better understanding of “the grey line” and nature's radio waves bouncer, the ionosphere. The attached PDF gives a good overview of this twilight zone phenomenon. Stay safe on the air!
