ISED Radio Equipment List

According to the ISED website:

It is illegal for consumers to import radio devices into Canada that do not bear a label with an Industry Canada certification/registration number.

Here's how to check for that certification/registration number, and make sure it's real.

  • Find the tag located underneath the radio or underneath the battery. Here are three examples:
Icom IC-7300 HF Radio Quansheng UV-K5 VHF/UHF Handheld Retevis RB48 FRS Radio
  • Look for the number that starts with IC (underneath the FCC ID number).
  • Use ISED's Radio Equipment Search tool to look up those numbers in the Certification Number field.

At first glance, it looks like all three of these radios are certified by ISED, but that's a bit surprising since the Quansheng UV-K5 radio is one of those VHF/UHF radios that can transmit on its entire bands. Here are the results from ISED's search tool for each:

  • Searching for 202D-376500 yields:
  • Searching for 27919-RB48 yields:
  • But searching for 30518-UVK5 did not return a result, and broadening the search to just 30518 returns a wifi enabled LED light:

It's hard to be 100% sure, but it looks like the IC certification/registration number for the UV-5K might be fake, which again, makes sense since this radio can transmit on its entire bands.
